Nintendo’s trailer for the upcoming Xenoblade Chronicles 3D (out on April 10 for the New Nintendo 3DS, bug your parents for both) focuses on the game’s characters. This is both the best and worst idea.
It’s the best idea because Xenoblade Chronicles has some of the most likeable characters I’ve spent company with in a JRPG. I like the dumb nerd Shulk. I like Reyn. I love their bromance. I like Dunban’s earnest, borderline cheesy heroism. And most of all, I want to put all their British accents in a bag and give it a big hug.
But the new trailer highlights a big problem with Xenoblade Chronicles that apparently carries over to the handheld version: There are some fugly face textures going on in this game.
It’s not as if Xenoblade Chronicles is a bad looking game, either. For the most part it’s gorgeous, and it remains gorgeous in this era of high definition. The sweeping Gaur Plains makes my heart sigh, and it’s impossible not to be moved when you see the Satorl Marsh light up for the first time.
Unfortunately, the trade-off for all that beauty is smeary-Vaseline faces. Which Nintendo has chosen to highlight for the new trailer.
Buy the game anyway.
